Filling different cells at a time
Greetings,
I have been given a large document containing blank cells which, I wish I could fill with the text at the starting of each blank space. For more clarification kindly find on attachment a sample of my document and what I wish to do. Your help would very welcome |

one possible solution
See attached; basically simply adding three new columns with formulas that give you what I think you want. If you want to replace the original columns, then you could do a copy>paste special>values on the three new columns and delete the original three columns.

Sure: Your original data starts in cell A2 (student ID). In cell E2 you'll see the formula: =IF(A2<>"",A2,E1) which means "if cell A2 is not blank, then display whatever is in A2; If it is blank then display whatever is in the cell directly above it". In this way the data is displayed correctly as you copy the formula on down to the bottom. Same method in cell F2. Cell G2 is simply whatever is in cell C2. That help?

Thank you again. What I din't understand is to write the formula of "if a cell is not blank" (<>"" ). This is new to me. I tried to search it in google but I didn't find a such a formula which say "if a cell is not blank". I realize it is the opposite of "equal to" written as =""
Thank you very much |

In your file, select the cells A1:C7
Press F5 (function key) on the keyboard, click Special… choose Blanks, click OK Now don't touch anything except: press the = sign on the keyboard, followed by the up-arrow (cursor key) then hold down the Ctrl key and briefly press the Enter key. (Your blanks should be populated now) Convert the formulae to plain values by copy/paste-special|Values in situ. |
