Default shading alternate rows – support.office.com suggestion not helping :-{

support.office.com says
  1. select cells
  2. set up new formatting rule
  3. use formula =MOD(ROW(),2)=0
Tried this … Excel says "the formula you typed contains an error". Any suggestions? If I knew how to read that sort of formula, I would have written my own anyway!

Could it be your locale requires a semicolon (;) instead of a comma (,)?

I also think the problem is you have different separator defined in Regional Settings. Considered your posting time, it looks like you are from Europe, so probably the formula must be
Code:
=MOD(ROW();2)=0
or when you want to format based on table rows instead of sheet rows, then like
=MOD(ROW() - ROW($A$1);2)=0
