Default Formatting Cells for Currency and Accounting

Hi all,

OS~Windows 7
Software ~ Windows 2010 Office Suite

I'm new to this forum and have run into a problem with Excel and I sorely need your help.

When I try to format a cell for currency or accounting, the following occurs;

1) it won't allow me to use a comma to separate values,
2) the drop down box under numbers changes to custom and gives me
values with additional decimal separators.

Example:

Currency $1,200.32 looks like this after formatting $1200.320.00
Accounting $ 1, 200.32 looks like this after formatting $ 12.200.32.

Is there a flaw in the Excel program? I have years of work that are effected. Any help would be appreciated.

Regards, Sparetyme

I did some research and found the problem. If this should happen to you, go to "File" then "Options", then "Advanced", then look for the "Thousands Separator" remove the decimal point and add a comma. This will change the cell formatting.
