Rather than change the data in the original column, copy the data to another column that you will use to edit. Thus you will have something like:

JLN:TRANSFER JLN:TRANSFER

which you will edit to be:

JLN:TRANSFER Transfer to John Smith

Thus you will still be able to filter the original data.
