Default I'm struggling to do a Vlookup in MS office 16

I keep getting the following message:

"There's is a problem with this reference. This file can only have formulas that reference cells within a worksheet size of 256 columns (column IW or lower) or 65536 rows."

I have never seen this before when doing a Vlookup and don't know what it means except that it won't let me do the Vlookup. Can anybody help?

Thank you

OK...I got one to open. When are you getting the error? I looked for formulas that might cause it and could not find any.
