Default Formatting unprotected cell in protected w/s makes the cell locked?

In my protected worksheet I edit an unprotected cell. When I change the format, sometimes (not all the time) the cell changes to "Locked". When making the cell unprotected I select the Edit and Format cell options. I have not been able to duplicate the situation, but it happens once in a while. Is there an answer to this?
