Default How to vertically align a merged cell to fit text

Here is the problem: Say, a merged cell (multiple rows and columns) has some arbitrary lengthy sentence for its content. If I double click between the line numbers on the left in order to vertically resize the cell to snugly fit the text, the size of the merged cell reduces to smallest default size, and the sentence reduces to a single line, such that only some the text (of the lengthy sentence) in it are displayed truncated.

Experimenting with the same sentence in an unmerged single cell however, shows no problems as such. It seems to me that merged cells do not behave like single unmerged cells.

How to do I vertically align a merged cell to the text content such that its content will always stay visible, and not truncated.
