Question Filtering data no longer defaults to search box Office 2016 Mac

In all the previous versions of Excel I've used, when one applies filters, then clicks on a filter, the cursor defaults to the search box, so one can simply click on the drop down filter (or hit alt+down) and then start typing, and Excel starts searching and filtering by the typed string.

I now find that when I click on the filter, the sort by "Ascending" button has the focus, and typing gets me an angry beep. I then have to go back to my trackpad and click in the search box and type, or hit tab 6 times to get back to the search box. It's maddening.

Any way to fix this irritation? The search box is the most likely place one would type in the filter box. All the other things are more likely to be mouse operated.

Thanks!
