Default Stacking charts and sending to front

I would like to display one of a series of charts (or pictures, etc.) that are stacked in a pile, where input from a cell can control which one is brought to the top for viewing. This would not be necessary if chart axis control included variables and/or calculated input instead of manually entered values. I had a guy in my department that was able to do this with Excel 4 back in 1997. I have the file, but have not been able to figure out how he did it.
