At work I use a network, Windows 7 and Excel 2003.



Have set up a spreadsheet using IF statements. I exceeded 7 statements and have extended the equation using &.

I tried to amend an equation in a cell by clicking in the the formula bar and adding in another step. The change was accepted but the cell doesnt show the answer. It does show the formula.

I checked the format of the cell and it had changed from General to Text. I changed the format back to General but still only see the formula and not the answer. The sheet is set to show product of formula and not Show Formula.

I also use COUNTA in the spreadsheet and amending a formula eg the range, results in the same problem.

What am I doing wrong and how can I fix it?

Grateful for any assistance.

Have you tried editing the cell then hitting F2 ?

Not familiar with usung F2.

I will give it a go when back at work and if necessary post a section of the spreadsheet.

I have attached a section of the spreadsheet to show whats happening and how the sheet is put together.

This has got me stumped. Grateful for any further help you can give.

Format the cell as General - Select - Hit F2 and Enter

I tried what you said on the spreadsheet I attached to my previous message and it worked.

In order for me to understand fully, can you explain why the problem arose and how your response fixed it?

The General formatting option is treated by Excel as a sort of "no formatting" option, so it will often try to guess what specific format you want it in.You can enter anything
If the cell is formatted as text before entering, anything you enter is considered text, even numbers
So a formula becomes text and therefore will just sit there waiting.

As first the cell must be formatted ( General is default) then edited, followed by Enter, we did it the same way.
Change format , edit the cell ( F2 does that) then enter

(BTW F2 edits almost everything in MS applications)

Why your cell was formatted as Text, I have no idea
