Is 19780225 a text string, a number or a format custom date? Perhaps post a small sample sheet?

First select the dates - Data Ribbon - Text to columns - Delimited-Next -Next
Under Column data format set date to YMD - Click finish (you now have real dates) Apply formula as attached
