Default Selection from cell with list contents autopopulates contents of another cell

Good day all,

This is my first post so let me start by saying thank you in advance. I will do my best to make sense describing the challenge I am facing in Excel...

I am creating a grocery shopping planner for our office. I have sheet 1, cell a1 as a list type (which i have done through the data validation > list )and the data in that list are meals (hot dogs, sandwiches, etc). The list items referenced in sheet 1, a1 are on sheet 2 cells b2 through b10. (so sheet 2, b2 would be hot dogs, b3 would be sandwiches and so forth). In sheet 2 column C, I will list the ingredients. So if sheet 2, b2 is hot dog, then sheet 2 C3 would be 'buns, franks, etc' .

What I would like to have happen is when the user selects a meal in sheet 1 from the list in A1 (which is pulled from sheet 2 , items b2-b10), then the ingredients list (sheet 2 c2-c10) that corresponds to items b2-b10 in sheet 2 will populate to another column on sheet 1.

So user selects a meal from the list and the ingredients populate for them somewhere else on the page. Its been a while since I have utilized excel at legth so I am a bit rusty here. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

How about using dependent drop downs? Select the meal type in one cell (hot dog, sandwiches, soups, etc) in the first drop down which then populates the second drop down (for hot dog in the first, then buns, franks, etc.)

You can have several rows of these with the first being one meal, the second being the next meal, multiples of each, etc.

Here is how that is done. If this sounds like something that might work and you need help, let me know.

I think that is exactly what I am looking for. I found a basic tutorial on dependent drop downs so I will play with that and let you know if I get stuck

Thanks again.

I dont know if the dependant drop downs is going to work...or i am using them in the wrong way.

Basically, to make it as simple as possible, I want the data in column X to be dependant on the data i select from a drop down list in column A

(if A is 'hot dog' then X is 'buns, franks', but if A is 'sandwhich' then X is 'bread, turkey, mayo')
