Default Office Compatibility Pack - will not open xlsx

I am running XP with Office 2003 ona desktop. I downloaded the Compatibility Pack for Office 2007 on an Admin account and had no problems opening an XLSX file.

When the non-admin user logged on they were unable to open the XLSX file. The error message stated "This file is not a recognisable format".

Since then, I did a test elevation of the user to the Administrators group, still the problem is not resolved.

Any ideas?

I am having a similar problem, however, I am the administrator. Last month I had to uninstall and reinstall Office 2003 Basic. After that the converter to convert .xlsx files to .xls quit working. I have uninstalled and reinstalled every which way possible and have reinstalled all the updates and I continue to get the same message when I try to reinstall FileFormatConverters.exe. "Another version of this product is already installed. Installation of this version cannot continue. To configure or remove the existing version of this product, use Add/Remove programs on the Control Panel.
Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office system (FileFormatConverters.exe)
The Installation of this package failed."

I cannot remove the former version from the control as it is NOT listed there. I have searched and wasted probably 15 hours trying to find what is on my HD that is causing this. Why Microsoft blocks the ability to reinstall over an existing install is beyond my understanding. Can anybody help? I've found that I am not the only person with this problem. But I cannot find the solution anywhere. I even found the question at support.microsoft.com BUT there was no solution offered.

Thanks

Default Office Compatibility Pack - will not open xlsx

I had the same problem. Several years ago, I installed the FileFormatConverters. I had to re-install Office 2003 and it would not open docx files. I found the "Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office" system and uninstalled it. Then installed the newer one. It worked. Peter

Default File converter failed

Make sure you update your Microsoft Core XML Services
go to http://www.microsoft.com/download/en...ang=en&id=3988 and install latest updates and try again. some times the file converter will fail if you try to open an email attachment.
Save the file locally then open it by going to File / open then navigate to the file.

Had same issue with one of the users here; He has office 2003 installed on his computer plus the compatibility pack 2007 but couldn't open any xlsx files while I as administrator can open them ....To resolve the issue; i've deleted user's profile locally. He is ok now.

Due to oldest version the file wasn't able to be get opened! In short, the best way for this is to convert the file format with help of XLSX file extension - How to open, convert or view XLSX file? - MyPCFile and then try to open the file!
You can thanks me later for sure
