X axis does not show Years from data
Simple graph to show Garden Yield (P&L) and other data for each year. Regardless of what the 2009-2014 columns are formatted as the X- axis on the graph does to change to reflect data even after formatting X axis to Automatically Based On Data.
I need the X axis to read 2009-2014 and so on. Tried Formatting 'Year Data' as yyyy under 'special' but this just altered the secondary 'Y' axis to the rhs. Earlier versions of Excel did not have this problem nor does Works Spreadsheet. Please advise. |

Select your graph
Select the "Design tab" under the new Chart Tools ribbon Click "Swith Row/column" twice

Gebobs,
Thank you, that worked on that particular graph, but not on one I put together today, in fact there was no change. It would appear that MS is removing functionality from the Office in little ways like this. At one time whatever values you had in the XY columns appeared on your graph axis, but not now. Previously I used to put the date but over time MS corrupted that now I just use the nmber to represent the date and now that doesn't work. It would appear that the functions on Excel now are there to allow you to make a pretty picture rather than construct a mathematical device as it was intended. I have noticed that sometimes the Trend function is greyed out and cannot be used. So what do I do next? |

X axis Does Not show data from X column
Yes that worked on my original graph, but on a new graph for something else completely different it didn't work.
You will note in jpeg XL that the numbers show in the window, but after carrying out the change of name for the series it reverts back (XL2) to as shown on the X axis. Should not the data on the axis represent the data you are highlighting to construct the graph in the first place? |

I presume you are selecting the data and then inserting a chart. For some reason that I have not been able to figure out, sometimes Excel doesn't interpret the leftmost column of data as the x-axis labels. More often than not, it interprets it as another data series and the default x-axis labels are an integer series (i.e. 1,2,3,...). This is what I found to be the case in the example from your original post.
To fix this, you have to: * delete remove the series that should be the x-axis labels from the Legend Entries * edit the Horizontal Axis Labels so that it uses the range you want. I haven't tried Peco's workaround yet, but that may be a shortcut. Of course, like mine, it is just that...a workaround. It would be nice if we could find out how to set Excel to do this automatically. It seems that it should, at least from my viewpoint, since this is the way I always make charts. How many times do you make charts that simply use an integer series axis? |

Thank you Gebobs, that worked. I have always highlighted the colums of figures and then gone to Insert Graph even going back to the days of Lotus 1-2-3, Works Spreadsheet and early versions of Windows Excel, in fact the older versions of Excel did what you expected them to do, but this 'ribbon' system only seems to concentrate on making a pretty picture and tends to be a bit hairy fairy to my liking.
You feel like a real muppet not being able to construct a simple graph, when you have been doing it for 25 years with older systems. Thank you for your help. |
