Default Is there a way to change how Excel auto selects where it pulls data?

What I want to do is when I pull the fill bar down the rows Excel grabs the cell in another sheet in the adjacent column but same row. I am trying to set up some formulas and when I try to auto-complete the formulas the locations where Excel pulls the data changes. I tried making the sheets match but then it is not easy to read for half of the sheets. I tried to copy and transpose after I got the formulas right, but the cell formulas changed. Is this possible or do I need to just manually go through every cell? Thank you
