Default Opening a file in Excel

I understand at this is probably a very stupid and most likely obvious question. However I am not by any means a Excel pro.

I recently upgraded to 2013 and when trying to open a previously saved .xls file instead of opening the selected file it only takes me to the screen that requires me to browse for the file. On older version I only needed to find the file and open it. Has this changed or am I just missing a setting somewhere? I really appreciate any help with this problem.

If I understand correctly, you are trying to open a file by directly clicking on its icon and when you do, Excel takes you to the open File dialog. Is that correct?

I have 2010 and have never had any issue like this. What happens if you open the file and save it as a .xlsx file?

Most of the files I am opening are Excel macro-enabled workbook files

A .xls is not an Excel macro-enabled sheet extension. It is the extension used for Excel 2007-2003 files which, if I recall correctly, could contain macros. This may be what is confusing Excel.

What happens if you save the .xls file as .xlsm (macro-enabled extension)?

What if you right click on the file, select "Open with" and in the window with choices, select Excel? There should be a box you can check mark where it asks you you if you want to set the program to always open these type of files with that program.
Once the file opens, You can use Save As to save it as an Excel .xlsm type.

Tried that. It is actually doing the same thing with .xlsm files. It just opens a Excel window and I have to go browse for the file to open it.

I did notice that the option it gives me to open with is "Excel Desktop". Not sure if that makes a difference or not.
