Cannot open Excel file
I have spent two hours working on an Excel file which was sent to me via email. I have saved the file on to a memory stick saving it as "copy of" but now when I try to open the file the following message appears "Excel cannot open the file "File name....." because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file"
How do I do that or how can I access the file? I am only a basic user of Excel files so do not understand all the technical terms etc. Can anyone help me as I need the information on the file by tomorrow. Thanks |

It sounds as though the file has been corrupted.
You should never save Office files to memory sticks (or open them from there) as they are a regular source of data loss. If the available space is too small the file is corrupted or lost completely. Similarly if there is an interruption to the data or you remove the flash media before the file has been completely written, you will get file corruption. Always work from the hard drive and copy to and from flash media.

The other possibility is that the computer you are trying to open it with cant open it because it is not converted. This happens all the time when an office 2003 tries to open 2007 or 2013 without a converter pack. What is the file extension of the file you are trying to open and although I see on your stats that you are using office 2010 I was hoping that maybe you were trying to open it with 2003 (wishful thinking)

Sportster,
For future reference, please give your threads titles that at least hint at what the issue is. Titles like 'Cannot open Excel file' are not particularly descriptive of the issue you're seeking help with. I've renamed the thread.
