How to add whitespace above/below text in a cell?
How to have space automatically appear before and after the text in a cell? I use (check) the Wrap Text button for all cells in a selected column, and it satisfactorily adjusts the height of all rows requiring vertical adjustment for the wrapped text.
The resultant row height is JUST high enough to accommodate the wrapped text, but when I Wrap Text for an entire column, all row heights are tightened so close that it's difficult to read the wrapped text. I know I can adjust each row's height manually, achieving the desired before/after spacing, but the worksheet contains too many rows to make this practical .. all rows tighten up again each time I Wrap Text on an entire column. What I'm looking for is something similar to MS Word's paragraph formatting, where you can specify the space to appear before and after text in a paragraph. I'm using MS Office for Mac 2011. |

You could try using a font that has more leading. For example, the Garamond font has relatively small characters compared to, say, the Calibri font. If you use the Garamond font and increase the point size to use approximately the same linear length as the Calibri font, the row heights will increase, giving you more whitespace above & below each line. FWIW 12pt Garamond approximates 11pt Calibri for overall character widths. Anything fancier would require a macro, but that would only serve to increase the space before the first line and after the last line in a cell.

Alter font & size to achieve interline spacing
Thanks, Paul. I'm afraid that your sugg is all that's available to alter vertical space in text in a cell. As you mentioned, greater space between all lines will give the desired space at the cells' tops and bottoms, but the same extra space between each line would be undesirable.
I'd considered a macro solution but, yes, it would require constant maintenance. I couldn't think of a convenient solution, and it's reassuring that someone with your skills & experience codifies my conclusions. |
