Default Detect Category Change

I know I've seen this done before somewhere but I'll be darned if I can find it.

I'm trying to detect the change in a column value.

I have a list sorted by "Category" (column title)
I have helper column that I need help modifying the formula for.
Currently it is just
=LEFT(B2,1)

That works just fine but what I really need to do is wrap it in a statement so that only the first instance is shown.

Sample attached.

Could some one point me in the right direction for the formula?

Thanks!

Scott
