Default 2 different col widths same col?

I've always understood that there's no way to have more than 1 column width in the same col on the same page in the same sheet.

However, an IT guy told my wife that there is a way.

Is there?

You cannot do that in Excel. You can, of course merge cells across columns, but that still leaves you with constant-width columns underlying them.

The constant width columns, once established, is not the problem with merged cells. It's the grid. The top 1/3 of the form (merged cells) wants no grid while the bottom 2/3's wants a grid. To my understanding either the entire sheet sees or does not see the grid.

By 'grid' I assume you mean the cell borders/gridlines. You can turn off the gridline display and have borders around only those cells you want them for.

How? In Print Page Layout you either check 'gridlines' or not.

I'm thinking that Format/Borders is only for additive cell borders.

Exactly.

But if you don't want that, your only workaround is to use cell merging and/or centring-across-selection to hide the gridlines.

Don't get it.

It's a cell format, for centring text across a range of columns without merging them.
