File extension issues
The file you are trying to open Form 3 income analysis.xls, is in a different format than specified by the file extension. I started getting this message yesterday when I try to open an existing Excel file. If I create a new Excel file and save it I can open it with no problem. |

Are you sure the file isn't an xls file or and xlsm file with an xlsx extension? Have you tried changing the extension to xls & xlsm to see whether it opens correctly in either of those formats?

Do you see this message when opening a workbook on this forum, or on your own PC? I see it on this forum all the time; it happens when someone uploads a workbook named something.xlsx. This board renames it something.xlsx.xls, and then when I open it I get a warning message because it's named .xls but it's actually an .xlsx.

The board software does not rename files. What sometimes happens is that people who have the Windows Explorer 'Hide extensions for known file types' option checked add their own extensions (which actually become part of the filename, not its true extension). When such files get uploaded, the true extension is revealed.

I'm willing to stand corrected ... but I don't think I get it yet. I just selected and uploaded two workbooks, one named x.xls and the other x.xlsx. I selected them both simply by clicking on them in the File-Upload dialog; I didn't type anything additional in the filename text box. When I open the first, it opens normally in my Excel 2010 without complaint. When I click on the second, I get this message: "The file you are trying to open, 'x.xlsx-1.XLS', is in a different format than the one specified by the file extension...." and so on. When I open that one anyway and then offer to save it, it wants to save it as "Copy of x.xlsx-1.xlsx".
I may be mistaken about what MSOfficeForums.com is doing, but it seems to me it's surely doing something that isn't completely correct. |

Both of your attachments save with the extensions that appear here and open correctly for me.

Hm. I'm not sure what to make of that. A few grasping-at-straws questions:
1) What version of Excel are you using? I would normally assume 2010, but since there's apparently a difference.... 2) By "opens correctly" you mean without that warning message that some of us get, right? |

I have both Office 2003 and 2010 installed on my system. That, however, has nothing to do with how the files are downloaded - that's an entirely web-browser and user issue. By "opens correctly" I mean without any file format warning message.

Ok, let's pursue that. Pecoflyer sees the same warning message I do, but not macropod; some users report my problem, and presumably some of those who are silent share macropod's experience. I'm using Firefox; Peco and macropod, what are you two using?

I also use FF, but again, I have no problems on other forums
