How to remove auto type entry
Hi,
So you know when you type the same word over & over again the file remembers it & starts spelling it out for you? Well by accident I typed cJ instead of CJ & even though CJ is in there, it keeps bringing up cJ which is driving me batty LOL How can I delete the mistake one so it knows to insert the correct one? Thanks Michelle |

Then the autocomplete should work for you. |

I already fixed it 5 minutes after I made the mistake. That didn't help.
And there would be no way to search every single entry to see if one slipped by. I have 1,500 entries. I doubt there's one earlier on in my work b/c the auto suggest always capped the C before, so I know it only started on that one mistake. |

You can't find & replace the same spelling of a word. It doesn't work like that.
In case you didn't understand what I wrote, I'm trying to get the auto suggest to change from cJ to CJ So I tried it your way even though I knew it wouldn't work & I was correct, all it does is find all the ones that are spelled correctly. Thanks Michelle |

Unless I've misunderstood what's going on, I think you can do that after all, eph2002. You're saying that when using <Ctrl-F> you ask for "cJ" and it finds "CJ" (right?). But if you expand the options you'll find a match-case feature; check that and you can tell Excel to find only lower-case 'c', upper-case 'J'.

I am not sure why my last post frustrated this user so much but I do not consider anything above "My Way" I would be happy to help with this further if ep2002 could post a sample worksheet. I apologize if this sounds rude this is not my intention at all. |

I'm sorry, I had no clue you could search for case sensitive text.
My apologies software, I only meant I didn't think one could do that. I've never even looked under the "options" area before. And THANK YOU for teaching me something Bob. I found the one entry, removed it, but it didn't fix the problem I even closed the file & re-opened & nothing. Thanks again Michelle |

Thank you.
Hmm, now when you say "sample", do you mean the whole file, or just a SS (screenshot)? If the former, no I can't do that. This is my client's work & the file is huge by now. If you just need a SS of the cell in question, sure I can do that Michelle |

Probably a sample. The best would be the list that we are trying to correct. This can be easily selected by selecting the top cell of that column then hold CTRL + SHIFT and press down. This will select all the data quickly. Paste that into a worksheet and post that worksheet.

Ok, here it is, but remember there's a lot more to the original file than just this one column.
I'm off in a minute to eat & may be back or may go to bed. Thanks Michelle |

2nd this may not have any effect at all but I did notice that there is a mixture of Arial and times new roman fonts in the sample causing some CJ's to look a little different I don't think this is at all what you are referring to though. So with that said does this issue continue after you press enter? or does it stay lowercase after you press enter? if it stays lowercase the auto-complete may have inadvertently been turned off. I certainly want to help you with this but these are my only 2 thoughts right now. We will battle it some more tomorrow. |

I'm with excelledsoftware in thinking that Excel's autosuggest doesn't keep a list anywhere but in the worksheets themselves—so that if all instances of 'cJ' are gone from the worksheets, then it shouldn't be offering it any more. But here are some ideas; and frankly they're all thin, but nothing else is working so I'll toss 'em in the air and see whether any of them fly.
1) There are other Find options we haven't considered. Notice the one labeled "Look in:"; on my machine, that option uses "Formulas" by default, and I have to change it to "Values" if it matters. As I understand it, the "Formulas" setting causes the Find option to look in what you see in the formula bar at the top, the "Values" setting to look at what's displayed in the cell itself. If you type "CJ" into a cell, then "CJ" is both the formula and the resulting value. But if you were to put this in a cell: Code:
=RIGHT("McJohn",4) On the other hand, if your formula is "=VLOOKUP(A2,OtherTab!B:E,4,0)" and that lookup is finding 'cJ' somewhere, then searching Formulas on this worksheet will come up empty for 'cJ' but searching Values will find it. 2) The above is a stretch, but this one may be a better chance: Are you looking Within:Sheet or Within:Workbook? If you looked in just the current worksheet, could 'cJ' be in some other sheet? I think Sheet is the default setting; try looking again using Workbook. 3) Notice also the option labeled "Match entire cell contents"; if it's checked, then the search will find a cell if it's just 'cJ', but not (again) if it's "McJohn" or even 'cJ ' (note the trailing space). 4) One last faint glimmer of hope: I'm not even sure this is a possibility, but I wonder whether the 'cJ' is still there because Excel doesn't know yet that it's gone from the worksheets. Is there any chance that the workbook has been open since you started this thread? I mean, do you leave your machine on, and the workbook open, when you go home at night? If so, maybe—just maybe—if 'cJ' is nowhere in the workbook, and you close the workbook and open it up again, this'll go away. Or, of course, you could always resort to the panacea of PCs: reboot, and see whether the problem disappears . |

Hi, I don't press "enter", I press "tab" to get to the next column. I tried enter & that didn't solve the problem. I tried to find where you said the font is different in some cells & couldn't. I didn't look at every cell of course, but I'm wondering how you saw this & which cells you are referring to. How can the auto complete be off if it's giving me cJ as an option? I'm not understanding. Thanks Michelle |
