Problems with Recording Macros
Whenever I try to record a macro I get a message "Unable to Record". When I go to the VBA Macro editor, it says that there are no open projects. Previously macros had been working, but one day my machine hiccuped and since then macros have not worked.
I have tried to find a solution on the internet but the suggestions I have found either don't work or don't make any sense to me. I am running Excel (as part of Office 2007 Home and Student edition) under Windows 8. Macros work fine under the Word application but not Powerpoint. Any help in finding an answer or a relevant article or posting would be much appreciated. |

Wait, "Powerpoint"? This is an Excel forum; which one are you talking about?

why mentioned powerpoint

My question relates to Excel - how to bet VBA for Excel to work again. I mentioned the other Office products thinking that might give someone a clue. Jerry |

Ok, I wasn't sure. I did google it a bit, and ran across one possibility: One guy had this problem and it turned out there was a password on the workbook; he removed the password and the record-macro ability came back. Of course, that's just one possibility.
I've never run across this before, myself. When you say the VBA editor tells you there are no open projects, I take it you mean you open a workbook with macros embedded (at least, there were macros in it before this problem), and now the VBA explorer window shows only Excel worksheets, no modules? Or if not that, exactly, then what? And what happens when you try to insert a new module there? Oh, and you say one day your machine hiccoughed: Do you remember more exactly? Not sure it would tell us anything, but you never know. Interesting that the Powerpoint macro capability should die at the same time Excel's did, but not Word. Maybe there's a clue there. What about the other apps—Outlook, Publisher, Office itself, Access if you have it? As far as I know, all the Office apps have the ability to use VBA macros. But not all of them can record a macro. Excel can; Outlook cannot; Word can. I never use PowerPoint—have never even opened it before today, on this machine—but when I look at it now, I notice that recording a macro doesn't seem to be one of the options in the Developer tab. But you say macros don't work, so presumably you knew where to look, which implies you've done it before. Were you able to record macros in PP before this? |

I open a new, empty workbook, save it as a macro-enabled workbook, and then open the macro editor. Previously, when I did this, the Project Panel would show the active workbook and would allow me to create a new module. In that module I could write macros and run them against the workbook. Now when I go into the VBA editor, the Project Panel is blank. If I try to insert a module, all of the options are grayed out and inaccessible. By "hiccup" I meant that Windows seemed to freeze on me and then it shut down. When I restarted it, a lot of my programs (Delphi, for example) were back at the state they were in when I first loaded them. For example, I had to reload all of my user libraries in Delphi. It was at this point (I think) that I started having trouble. As far as trying with other office products, I only used the macro capability with Excel and Visio. It currently doesn't work in either of them. I tried to record a simple macro in Word a couple of days ago and it seemed to work. When I tried again a short time ago, it didn't. Based upon some internet investigation, I looked for a Personal.xlsm file and found there wasn't one. I created an empty excel file and saved it as Personal.xlsm in the Office12/XLSTART folder in the office directory but that didn't help. Beyond all of that I am lost! Thanks for any help you can give or directions you can point me in. Jerry |

In this pessimistic mood I'm partly affected by the observation that there are a small number of things I used to do in Office that no longer work the same. In some cases I'm convinced they moved or upgraded the capability but neglected to document it where I can find it; in two or three, it doesn't seem to act as it should and I suspect, from my own experiments and from reading on the web, that it's a bug they still haven't fixed since it was reported in 2011. From that and the fact that the standard of documentation has gone downhill too—important data missing from the references, and even when I try to add them myself I'm told, invariably but uninformatively, "there was a problem when we tried to add your comment"—I begin to wonder whether Excel, Outlook etc have simply gotten too complex to maintain any longer; maybe some new basement hobbyist will now come along and eat their lunch, amidst chaos and disorder for the next few years. But I tend to get these grouchy phases when I'm having trouble making things work right, and the fact that my decades-old ISP (AT&T) is increasingly unable to deliver email, as well, is adding to the mood. Maybe in another few months I'll have dug to the bottom of all these problems and will be back to my usual sunny assumptions about the magnificence of everything around me. |

Final Post
Bob
Again thanks for your efforts. I will try to see if Microsoft can help. I tried the uninstall/reinstall a couple of times but, despite my best efforts, I discovered that some elements of the former settings were not destroyed and (I think) carried the problem forward. Jerry |
