Hmm, you're right. Well, maybe I triumphed too soon; but I'm committed now, I guess, so I'll just pretend confidence that it's going to work. Let me know, either way.

Morning Bob.

Still no luck after multiple variations of the process....

Running out of time to complete this, so I will likely pass the import file as is to the user I intended to "send" the appt too and have him upload or import the file into his calendar...

However, in the interest of finding a solution, I did some experimenting this morning.

1. I exported an appt in xls, Excel 97-2003 - and re-imported it allowing duplicate appt. Going thru the import wizard, I clicked on Map Custom Fields which will allow you to see what you are importing and the suppossed results in Outlook when the import is complete. The process, tried twice, added the appt to my calendar, but did not popluate the required or optional attendees field. I then send you an appt and repeated the process. In these attempts the process added a duplicate appt, with the "send update" button active, making me believe that Outloo recognized that an update to the existing appt was created.

2. I exported the appt as a CSV, DOS file and re-imported it (yes, I view the file in Notepad and the double quotes were present. The results were the same, the appt was created in my calendar, but without the required or optional attendees fields populated.

At this point, I am all but giving up, unless you have discovered something else to try...

Dave

I did think of one more test, but it isn't one that I think will solve the problem, rather just a diagnosis. If you feel like taking the time, try creating an appointment in Outlook, exporting it to CSV, deleting the appointment in Outlook and then importing the CSV again.

What I predict (given the troubles we're having) is that the appointment you import from Outlook itself (that is, from the CSV that Outlook created) will have the same problem, ie the attendee fields won't be populated.

I haven't tried that myself yet, but I probably will. If my prediction is verified, I suppose it means that Outlook, whether by design or by bug, never did do that; the problem isn't in your method at all, but in Outlook itself.

If by some chance that import does work, then obviously we must carefully examine the two CSVs, one from Outlook and one from Excel, to see where they differ; because the CSV has no hidden codes, it's just plain text.

Hi Bob, I already twied that, er um, tried that.

I exported to CSV an existing appt with a required attendee. Checked the CVS via notepad for appropriate double quotes, deleted the original appt, the imported the exact same CVS file, I exported minutes before.

The appt was imported in to Outlook Calendar but the required attendee was not.

I hate to admit it but I give up..

FYI, I did post this issue on the Outlook Forum page and as of late yesterday, there were no replies....

Thanks for all your help trying to resolve this.....

Only thing I can think of, then, is to report it to Microsoft as a bug. Unless they tell you that the attendees are deliberately not imported (as a security mechanism, perhaps)—though I don't believe that—I should think it's something they'd be interested in fixing in time for the next release.

Wait, there is one more thing. It's a pain, but I imagine it's possible: Write yourself a VB program that a) imports the CSV into Outlook, b) reads the email addresses from the CSV and c) modifies the Outlook appointment accordingly. It's just a workaround, and it may well be more work than it's worth to you. But at least you can be sure of getting it to work ... eventually.

VBA code - no so much.... I am currently teaching myself VBA for Excel for a project directly related to this whole issue - Excel has marco recording which along with a number of Excel forums has greatly assisted me efforts. Outlook, has no such thing as a marco recorded so I would be starting from scratch - and for such a small thing as this, it wold not be a very efficient use of my time.

Thanks again Bob for all you asistance.

Bob, one last reply on this issue. I did submit the same question to the Microsoft Community.

The response I got was that you cannot use an import to send ot appt, like I was trying, they suggest I use VBA... see below...

You can't create meetings and send out invitations by importing an Excel sheet.

When you want to do this, you'll need to create a VBA solution which creates meetings and uses an Excel sheet as the source (or do this from Excel to cycle through all the records and create meetings).

What he didn't really address—and I might be inclined to push a little—is that apparently one can't create meetings and send out invitations by importing an Outlook appointment, either. That's the part that puzzles me. If someone at Microsoft were to tell me that's by design—perhaps a security measure, as I guessed earlier—I'd probably relax. But until someone says that, I have to wonder whether they misunderstood your question.

While you were reading all the entries for this thread, LadyK, did you happen to notice that our conclusion is we can't do it? We tried all the ways we could think of, and decided Outlook allows exporting meetings but (apparently) won't accept importing them.
