Default Cell Background Color: Base it on Content of Cell?

Hello, I am using Office Home and Student 2010 and have an Excel 2010 question.

I’ve been using Filemaker Pro 12 to manage my movie collection, and have exported the database records to a .xlsx file. It appears to have exported fully and properly.

Now, I’m working with Excel 2010 and Access 2013, which I bought last week. Anyway, here’s my question:

One of my Excel columns is “Color.” (My movie collection is color-coded based on genre.)

I’d like the background color of the cells in this column to reflect the information in each cell. For example, if the word RED is in a cell, I want that cell to be red. If the word BLUE is in a cell, I want the color to be blue. Et cetera.

Do I need to use Conditional Formatting for this, in Excel 2010, or does this require something else? How do I go about learning how to do this?

Thank you for any assistance you care to give. J. Danniel

This should work fine with CF. However if you have many colours it will take some time to set up ( and might slow your sheet down). In this last case there should be some VBA code on the Net

I guess the issue now is how many is "many?"

There will be seven colors.

Is there a web site or tutorial site you can recommend in particular, to explain how to do this? Thank you! Jd

Seven does not seem to be undo-able
Select your range - Home Ribbon- Conditional formatting - New rule - Use a formula - Enter =$A1="red" and format as needed
Do the same for the others always using $A1 ( if col A of course, otherwise, adapt as needed)

You could probably find more explanation on YouTube or similar sites

I got it! All the colors. It took some minor tweaking, but it worked.

Thank you for your help.
