Smile object variable or with block variable not set

Hello, I get the following error when pressing the "save" icon on the toolbar in Excel: object variable or with block variable not set. I am only able to save a document by hitting "Control S" or going to "file/save". This all started when I got a new computer a month ago. I am not very techy and have gone to our IT department 6 times and all they do is reset/restore my profile, which is almost more annoying than not being able to save because I have to redo all my settings AND it never solves my Excel problem. I can't be the first person out there to have this happen Please help! I will take any advice I get here and ask my company IT department to try it.

Hi MJP,

I suspect the problem is caused by a faulty 3rd-party addin, or perhaps a faulty Office installation on your PC. The only other likely source of error is a faulty Excel template that loads whenever Excel starts. Simply resetting/recreating your profile won't fix any of these problems.

You can test whether an Addin or template is at fault by holding down the Ctrl key when you start Excel. This prevents them loading. If Excel works fine in 'safe' mode, you know to start looking at your templates & Addins. If it's no different, your Office installation is most likely faulty.

For template issues, check out what files are listed in the folder referenced in File|Options|Advanced>General>"At startup, open all files listed in". Move any files in that folder to another folder, then re-start Excel. If the problem goes away, the culprit is one or more of those files.

To see what, 3rd-party addins are installed, go to File|Options|Addins. Try deactivating them one at a time, so as to identify which, if any, is faulty. Then get your IT dept to uninstall, then reinstall, the faulty Addin, if there is one.

For a faulty Office installation, have your IT dept repair it (via Programs & Features > Microsoft Office > Change in the Windows Control Panel).
