no automatic update from external source file

I have a 'Master Templates' with several sheets (including 1 called 'General') containing lists of keywords.
These keywords are copied into a 'Slave Template' sheet in a different workbook (and later used for named ranges and defining lists)



in the template is the following formula used for copying;
IF('name of server\[Master Templates.xlsx]General'!A14="","",'name of server\[Master Templates.xlsx]General'!$A14)

when the master template is updated with an extra keyword at the end of one list, the 'Slave Template' is not updated automatically unless both files are open

Can this not be updated with the Master Template closed ?
using Excel 2007
