What is Application Automation and How can I use it in VBA

How do I use Applicaion Automation in VBA to access and work with data in Excel worksheets from MS/Access. Could someone provide a code sample of how I can use Application Automation to import (I can use the DoCmd,,Spreadsheet function) data from multiple worksheets within a workbook. I would prefer to work with multiple ranges if that's possible.
