Default Office/Excel

First time user...I know very little of Office and Excel. I have been using an old version of Excel for a database of some financial information that I
update every few months. To work with this update, I have always used

a cd that a neighbor gave me years ago. This CD is homemade, and has
a label (again homemade) Office XP -Office 10 and Excel. This cd contains
a file ProPlus.MSI.
Today, I could not download this file.t. I get an error message - Uninstallation of the Patch Package is not supported.

I'm really lost of this.

Thanks

That suggests you're trying to use an illegal copy of Excel. You won't get any help with that here - or on any other reputable forum.

As I mentioned, the cd I am using was provided to me by a neighbor...I did
not know anything about the legality of what he provided me.

I thank you for your reply, but how can I solve this problem? What "legal"
steps can I take at this point to use this old but still (for me effective)
program?

Thanks

If the CD is not a genuine Microsoft CD, but a copy made by your neighbour, then you are using pirated (stolen) software. From what you've said, probably both you and the person who supplied it to you have been breaking the law. The penalties for this can be quite severe. I find it hard to believe that, with so much publicity about software piracy in recent years that anyone using a computer wouldn't be aware of the issues.

I am disappointed that you have taken such a cruel position on this issue.
I cannot speak for my neighbor but I can say that I was unaware that I was using "pirated" software all of these years in running the Excel program

You seem inclined to punish me by not assisting me with a solution. I do
not think I am deserving of this attitude on your part.

Am I guilty until proved innocent?

Interesting. When God asked Adam whether he'd eaten the forbidden fruit, his only defence was "the woman gave it to me".

The fact is that you are using software you've obtained illegally and it is unreasonable for you to expect anyone with an ounce of integrity to help you further that endeavour. Do the right thing and go and buy yourself a legitimate copy - it's not as if it'll break the bank.

OK - I have been unknowingly using an illegal copy.

I would like to obtain a legal copy but frankly, do not know where I could get one. Is Excel still available at retail level? Buy Online? Any direction
on this would be helpful

Yes, absolutely. I expect the version you want will be Office Home and Student 2010 which includes Excel, Word, Powerpoint and OneNote.

If you work for a company, they might have a special deal with Microsoft which allows their employees to buy MS Office at a reduced price. Worth checking.

If you want to buy online -
http://www.microsoft.com and then click on Buy > Office Software.
Make sure that you check the "before you buy", "features" and "system requirements" product information to make sure that it is the version you want and that your computer meets the requirements to install and run it.

Alternatively, your local computer store will certainly sell MS Office and will be able to help you determine which edition would suit you best. If you're not confident about installing it then I'm sure they would be glad to help you with that too.

Thank you very much...I really appreciate the suggestions you have provided to me, especially the compatability issues.

You are a good person and apparently understanding of my situation.

Thanks again
