Default Using "if" function

Is it possible to get if function to show the contents of a cell ie =IF(A1<1,"FAIL","=A2")

Hi,

Sure, your formula is really close but you need to add "" around the letter y

=IF(A2="y","pass","fail")

So, when you're using formulas, if you want to use a cell reference you just put that directly in the formula, eg. A1 or B3
If you want to use a word (ie. a String) then you have to surround it with "" , eg "Hello" or "y"

don't know if this is possible with the if function but i want to enter text automatically from a downloaded file from an instrument i have got most of it to work but the instrument hes limited fields and i need to add a location field. So i was wondering if i added a numuber to the description of an item say "iron 1" "tv 2" etc when i down load it into excel could i use if to say if "1" kitchen "2" lounge ETC so basically what i want to know is can you use if function to look at a specific part of a cell ie in a cell containing iron 1 just look for the 1 and ignore the iron .sorry for being long winded
