Default MS Query IsNull issue

I have an Excel MS Query that checks a text field (Binloc) for data by the Is Not Null operator using Synergy's ODBC client. This query works and only returns records with Bin locations. In preparation to move to SQL 2008 database the same query returns all records. SQL obvioulsly considers the field space or something other than null. I cannot find an operator that allows me to test both null and space.
Any help is much appreciated.

thanks...
