Default Insert Picture changes colors

I am trying to insert an image into a Word document. The Word document has a coloured background (it's red 204:0:0). I've carefully prepared the image in Photoshop to have a matching background (actually for some reason it's 204:0:1 but I don't suppose anyone will be able to see the difference). Here's the image I'm inserting:

But when I insert the image into Word, the background of the image changes to 208:28:0 so it no longer matches the background in the Word document. Here's what it looks like in Word:

Word seems to have modified the colour balance of the image in some way. Maybe it thought "this image is a bit on the red side - I'll just improve it a bit". Well, I'd rather it didn't double guess what I'm aiming at... How do I stop Word changing the colour balance of the inserted image?

This is Word 2007 running on Windows 7 32 bit.

Thanks - Rowan

Hi Rowan,

Have you tried printing the page? What you're seeing may be no more than a display issue. You should also be able to set the colour in Word to 204.0.1, the same as your image. Do note too that Word know nothing of whatever tweaks you may have done in Photoshop regarding monitor/printer colour calibration.

Thanks for your reply.

I'm going to have this printed by a print shop, so what it looks like on my inkjet printer is somewhat irrelevant. I need to be as sure as possible that the image is correct before sending it to the print shop, otherwise I risk wasting the print run. I can't just assume that 208:28:0 will look the same as 204:0:0 when printed, even though it looks much more orange on the screen.

It is, surely, also irrelevant how I created the image in Photoshop, or indeed if I used any other application. If I open the PNG image in Paint, the red is 204:0:0. My background in Word is 204:0:0: But when I insert the PNG file into Word, the red colour has changed to 208:28:0. This cannot be anything to do with Photoshop. It's got to be Word it seems to me.

>You should also be able to set the colour in Word to 204.0.1

The problem is that the image, when imported, is no longer 204:0:0 - it's 208:28:0. Yes, I could set my background in Word to this colour, but it's not the colour I want. I want a pure red, not an orangey colour... Why is Word modifying my image?

Thanks - Rowan

Hi Rowan,

I agree that Word should not change the image's colouring from 204:0:0 to 208:28:0 - and I'm surprised that it does. I'm unable to explain this behaviour or suggest a remedy - it appears to happen in earlier versions too.

Yes, I've tried this in 2003 and 2007 - both seem to do exactly the same.

Can you suggest how I can get help with this from someone at MS?

Thanks - Rowan

Hi Rowan,
You might try contacting MS Tech Support (http://support.microsoft.com/) but, since this behaviour goes back to at least Word 2000, I doubt MS will be in any hurry to do anything about it.

Red face Using RGB or CMYK

Hello,
I realise this question is 2 years old by now and unlikely to help Rowan but I have experienced the same problem when importing immunofluorescence pictures for my PhD thesis. I thought that word might be changing my .tif somehow when I imported it so I tried copying it from word back into photoshop and I noticed that the colors were darker than my original .tif file that I had generated using adobe Illustrator. Turns out I was exporting from illustrator using CMYK color model instead of RGB, I believe word uses RGB. I tried exporting and importing to word again using RGB (also ticked a little box that said 'imbed ICC profile') and printed it. To my eye the color problem seems to be fixed. Hope this helps someone
