Somebody has already told me that TIFF and PNG images can store vector images. Using Matlab and Illustrator when I save an image to PNG or TIFF format Word is still opening it as a bitmap image.. So, it does not solve the problem.

How are you opening the file up? If you use the "insert object" -> "Create from File" and select "Link to File" this will mean that you can edit the png of tiff in any graphics program and it will get updated automatically because its no embedded the same way.

Or am I still mis-understanding you?
