Default Copying a picture from Word with inserted shapes

Hello - I pasted and cropped a screen print into a Word document and then I added some open square shapes to highlight certain sections. I now want to paste this picture into an Outlook email, and the cropped screen print does paste, but without the open square shapes. The same thing happens when I try to copy and paste this picture into the same Word document; the open square shapes are missing. I'm sure there's a way to do this, but I haven't been able to figure it out. Any ideas?
Thank you.
