When you copy & paste a chart from Excel into Word, the underlying data also get copied as a table. Word tables are performance hogs. A multi-column 50,000 row table is bound to slow things down.

If you use Paste Special and the 'Microsoft Office Graphic Object' option, your text quality should be preserved. If you need to keep the data synchronised with Excel, use the Paste Link option, but be aware that refreshing the links may take some time.
