Import graphic file into word for printing labels.
Hi All,
I have made a few graphics in Inkscape (.svg file) which I would like to Import into Word and use them for printing labels. I have tried converting the file to a PDf and even importing the PDF into Word and converting it into a Word.doc. When I try and open it in the label page I just get the red cross. Maybe it cannot be done ? But I would appreciate some guidance if anyone has managed to aheive this, or perhaps not ? thanks ChrisW |

Why don't you use the .svg files as they are - why convert?

Graphics into Word for label printing.
Hi, thanks for your reply.
I have tried this as well I think. What I have the problem with is that I cannot find out how to convert the file in Word into a particular label format so that it is sized correctly for the label size I am using. I just can't find out how you do this. thanks Chris W |

I also found out that when I converted the .svg into a Word.doc it did not handle the graphics very well and there were distortions and extra lines put in so it did not look good.

If you want an image on all labels without any other text included, an easy option is to first open Excel (I’m assuming you have Excel) and save the blank/empty sheet/Workbook with a suitable name so you can recognise it, in the My Data Sources folder located in the Documents folder.
It can be saved anywhere, in a location of your choice, but you’d need to navigate to that location in the label creation procedure. If it’s saved in the My Data Sources folder, Word will open that folder automatically for you to choose the ‘Empty’ file source (recipients) during the label creation. Once the above has been done, open Word and click the Mailings tab > Start Mail Merge > Labels. In the Label Options, select your label make and size. Navigate to and insert your chosen image via the Insert > Pictures tab. Change the ‘Wrapping’ to In front of text. Position and resize if necessary. Go back to the Mailings tab > Select Recipients > Use an existing list > Select the saved blank file (you need to navigate to any other location if saved there) > Click OK. Click Address Block > OK > Update Labels > Preview Results. Finish/Merge/Print as required. Click the image below to see a short video of the above procedure. I have used Word 2019 in this example. Other versions may be slightly different. I hope the above helps you out. |

Thanks for taking the time to explain. I'll give this a go and hopefully it will resolve the issue. I'll let you know how it pans out...

I would recommend you export the Inkscape graphic as a PNG. It is not a vector format but I find this is the most robust format for most graphics you would produce in Inkscape. And PNGs support transparency so you have that flexibility as well.
In my experience, Word doesn't do well with SVG formats but I haven't had problems with PNGs

Thank you for that information. I have had a few replies with differing suggestions - so hopeully will get to grips with it. I have managed to do a few labels but it's been a struggle and a lot of fiddling around. The main problem seems to be that once I have the graphics for the label transferred over to Word, then getting it sit well in the label template seems difficult, and not helped by the fact that the ability to adjust the positions and size of the graphic to fit in the the template seem very limited.
I understand what you say about PNG files, they seem fairly bullet proof. ChrisW |

Graphics into Word for label printing.
Hello.
My thanks to those who responded to my request for help in putting Graphic files into Word and then onto labels. Particular my thanks to Moonshine whe provided me with a explanation and a great video clip and further support. I'm pleased to say I acheived what I wanted to do - so I'm now able to get my graphics created on Inkscape over to Word and onto labels. The main thing I found was once I had my graphic onto the label sheet manipulating and sizing it was a struggle, but by selecting another tab on the 'Layout' drop down list the manipulation and sizing was much more pro-active and this enabled me to get the graphic image right into position. I also had to learn how to put a non-standard label sizing into Word as the labels I am using were not on the pre-installed drop down list. So quite a bit of accurate measuring of the position and size of the labels before I could get the data into the label list. Only need to do it the once though. So success ! thanks to all. Chris.W. |
