Default Randomly positioning images

I'm writing a report in Word and have an annex at the end where there will be 3 pages of randomly sized images that I wish to randomly position on the page. There will be no text. I'm having trouble positioning the images on the page. Can someone please advise me on this? Thanks

What do you mean by 'randomly position'. There is nothing 'random' about how Word places images. You may find Photo Gallery Add-in Template useful, as that was intended for putting images in reports.

Hi, thanks for reply. I'm so used to using Photoshop where you open images, click on them and drag to position them anywhere you like on the page without restriction. I'm writing a report in Word and find that collating images on a page is very restrictive. I have numerous images of all different sizes and wish to position them on a page in positions that look right. Something similar to what I'm trying to achieve can be found here...Portfolio Gallery – Image Gallery Plugin – WordPress plugin | WordPress.org If you scroll way down until you find the heading SCREENSHOTS, then you will have an idea of what I'm aiming for. Thanks

Unfortunately for your requirement, Word is not a page layout application and what you are trying to achieve would be quite difficult. One possibility is to insert the images either in front of or behind text (you can set these options from File > Options > Advanced > Cut Copy and Paste > Insert/Paste pictures as: ) You can then drag the images from Windows File Explorer and drop them in the page and drag to place.

You will also probably have to adjust the sizes of the images to get them to fit where you wish. Using a table (as in my previous suggestion) works better for Word image collections.

Thanks for reply. I've been thinking about this again and I think I'll try this. In Photoshop I can scale and position the images to suit the layout on an A4 page/canvas. then save it as a .jpg. Then I can insert an image, (.jpg) into the word A4 page, and if both A4's are the same size in both progams, (as they should be), then the inserted .jpg should cover the Word page exactly. I'll try this tonight. If it works then it will solve my 'random images positioned randomly' problem.

That would be the approach I'd use to avoid the headaches of overlapping images in Word.

Here's a tip though: when you place the full-sized A4 image, Word will probably attempt to scale the image to fit within the text area (defined by the "paper size" less the margins). To get around that, use the Layout dialog to set the Size to 100%, and then the Position tab to set the alignment "Left relative to Page" and "Top relative to Page". This will place it in the upper left corner so it will properly fill the full page.

If you can print full-bleed, this technique can be modified slightly. Create your image with bleed, then set the alignment slightly above and to the left of the top left corner (i.e. horizontally "Absolute position -0.1" to the right of Page" and vertically "Absolute position -0.1" below Page". The negative amounts will place it 0.1" above & to the left of the upper left corner, so if your image was created to be 0.2" larger in both dimensions, you'd have a 0.1" bleed all around.

You can achieve the same effect for an image created at exactly the paper size if you scale the it to slightly larger using the Layout dialog's Size tab settings.

Note that not all printers are able to print full-bleed.

Thanks for reply.

I've been having success with measuring the text area on the word document and creating that same sized area in Photoshop. I then arrange my images within that area and save as a .jpg. I then insert the image into the Word document. If needed I can also type the image title and/or label in Photoshop using the same sized font as in Word. The advantage of typing in Photoshop is that I can position the text anywhere I want to by dragging. I don't get any of that Word complaining nonsense that I can't type here and can't position it there, I just do it...Ahh the freedom......
