Difference between pasting and inserting an image?
This might be a dumb question, but is there any difference between pasting and inserting an image into the word document? I'm not talking about pasting from another application. If I have a folder containing an image, I can either copy and paste it from the folder or I can insert it from the menu. From my side, the image looks the same in the doc, but is that also the same from the Word side? If there's a difference, which one is more reliable? [One of my doc once lost all the images and some people said it was because I pasted them]. Additionally, if there's a difference, will they be expressed by different codes in VBA? Thank you very much! |

Whether you copy/paste or use Insert, the image ends up being inserted into the document. As far as Word is concerned, the result is the same with one important difference: If you insert into a table cell with a fixed row height and/or column width, the image size will be constrained to fit within those fixed dimensions; that does not apply to copy/paste.

Difference between pasting and inserting an image?
The main difference is if you paste in an image it automatically makes it a bitmap, whereas if you insert it you can choose a jpeg or gif, which are much smaller file sizes.

Without wanting to place too fine a point on it, jpg and gif files are both bitmap formats.

I agree with Paul that both jpg and gif are bitmap formats.
However, Lizsaskia probably meant that the copied graphic is pasted as a Windows Bitmap (aka .bmp format) which is also a bitmap format but takes up a lot more disk space since it isn't compressed. This would be the case if the image was opened in a bitmap editor and then selected and copied before pasting to Word. However, if the file is selected in Windows File Explorer and copied that way, pasting it into Word will insert it in the same format it had when you copied it {which is the same as using Insert from Word}. In my own experience, I don't paste from File Explorer but I do use drag and drop from File Explorer to Word and would consider that as functionally the same.
