I import graphics by reference to a lower level directory, like \\Images. After I import the images, I resize them as needed. I've used this approach for 15 years with great success.



However, in Word 2007, when I close the file and reopen it (or print the file), Word loses the sizing information and imports the images at 100% (or it fills the text box or table cell), which means that I have to resize every image, clearly not a tenable workflow.

BTW, the import method I use involves an INCLUDEPICTURE field. It looks like this:

{INCLUDEPICTURE "{FILENAME \p}\\..\\Images\\Image.png" \* MERGEFORMAT \d}

It works great, except that Word can't keep the assigned image sizing. If anybody knows how to fix this, I'll be super grateful.

Did you try to have a look at image properties?

Right mouse click on the image and select "Edit image". Then look for "Size" tab and check, whether your settings are right.

When I right-click the image, I see 'Edit Picture' in gray, i.e., inactive. (I do not see 'Edit Image'.) I believe that Edit Picture is for drawings created in Word, although I'm not sure because I never use that feature.

I also have the Format Picture option, which is where I adjust the size of my imported image (usually a screen grab, but sometimes an eps image). The Format Picture dialog has no way to lock the settings you assign.

What's interesting is that when I reopen the document, the size of the images is correct. However, if I click the image and press F9, Word reimports the image at 100% (abandons the sizing). This is a fatal problem because everytime I print, the print function reimports the image and drops the sizing information.

I did not see this behavior in Word 2003 and earlier versions. This is an unfortunate breakdown, because my documents are graphics intensive. If I have to embed every image, then my file size grows astronomically, and my ability to update images (with replacement images) is made much more inefficient.

Hm, that is interesting.

Format/Edit picture is not for drawings created in MS Word, it is actually to edit pictures that you have inserted into Word.

That is why it is interesting that you have it grayed, that means that there is something wrong.

Try to change your file format to .png. Maybe that is the problem.

(1) Imported, <linked> .png and .gif files behave in the same way, i.e., you can import the files by linking to another folder, resize them, and the Edit Picture option is not available. When you save and reopen the file, the images retain the size settings.

(2) However, when you click one of these images and press F9, the image is reimported at 100% (sizing is lost). The same behavior happens when you print these images.

(3) When you import and <embed> the .pngs and .gifs, you see the same behavior as in (1) but not as in (2). These images retain their size settings.

(4) Imported, linked .eps files behave differently. For those images, the Edit Picture option is avaiable. When you select Edit Picture, the image is placed inside a frame and converted into an editable object. Linking information is apparently lost and I assume Word has embedded the object.

So I'm back to square one. (I wonder if this has changed in Office 10.) Thanks for your attention, even if you don't have a solution.
