Word resizing JPEGS and corrupting TIF colours

For some reason in the last 2 weeks my version of Word (2002) running on Windows 10 has started misbehaving when I try and insert pictures from file.

If they are JEPGS the Word document vastly increases their size, such that to get them to print at 100% of the actual JPEG dimensions, Word Format_Picture thinks the file should be at around 16%.



Probably related is that if I try and insert the same graphics as .TIF the size is also a problem PLUS the colours get corrupted - the red values seem to go right down.
