How do I optimize images for Word?

Hi.

I'm using Word 2010 to create an ebook.

I must add many images to the Word document, which I must then save as a PDF file.

What is the best practice to ensure that the file size of the PDF ebook is as small as possible without compromising the quality of the images too much?

I have already gone into File > Options > Advanced > Image Size and Quality, and left the options unchecked. This means that, by default, the images that I insert will be compressed to 220 ppi.

What else should I do?

Should I also use Photoshop to reduce the size of each image before I insert it? If so, to how many pixels should I reduce them?

As you can probably tell, I don't know what I am doing!

Any assistance will be appreciated.

Just now, I inserted an image that was 855 KB. The document's file size, after I saved it, increased by 855 KB.

Why is the document file size still increasing by 855 KB even though the images are set to be compressed by default?

If you let Word compress the images (which includes both re-scaling and recompressing the data), you really don't need to make any changes to them in another program. As for the file sizes, jpg images, for example, are already highly compressed, so the only reductions you'll see when they're added to a Word document is if the inserted size was significantly above 220dpi and/or the image used less compression than Word does.
