"Insert Picture\Link to File..." embeds picture
I have a Word document a few pages long, 40K in size.
I've been trying to insert an illustration with Insert Picture\Link to File... because I didn't want to physically insert/embed the illustration, which would make the document much bigger. But when I tried this with one illustration, the document ballooned to 500K in size, meaning that the picture got physically inserted (embedded rather than just linked). It worked fine with another document though. I can't figure out why it happens only sometimes. Is this a bug in Word? |

Depending on the link method used, you can both embed and link. That means Word keeps a copy of the image in the document in case the original can't be found.
