Default Text Boxes or Template

Hi,

Ok, so I'm doing this letter for a client & I've never done text box work in Word before, but she said to use it. There's an image in her letter that needs to be recreated.

I figured out most of what I needed to do, but I have a few questions:

  1. Someone mentioned templates. When would someone use a template vs. a text box?

I think this letter will go out again several times, so is a template a better option or I have to make the image into a text box anyway & then use a template?
  2. I got the logo in there, but how do you move it around so I get it where I want to? Same with the text on 3 of the lines, how can I move it around?

How can I make the logo smaller, or do I have to do that in another program & then insert it into the text box?

She had a black background & white text. I found the background color & it made the background black, but it didn't make the entire background black. Is that b/c I have 2 text boxes within the large squared area?

Where the text is, that area's background is white, so that's not working. When I tried to make the text white, of course you couldn't see it so I removed that.
  3. I can't figure out how to insert short vertical or horizontal lines. I tried to drag the line shape from the toolbar, but it didn't work. I couldn't see the line once I expanded it vertically. I even double clicked & then made it white thinking that was the issue, but nothing.
  4. Also off topic, how does one move the footer down further. It's default is always to be high up from the end of the page, but I need more space. When I tried to go into the footer & put a blank line it, it moved the signature down onto a 2nd page.
  5. If anyone has a gig on Fiverr, please let me know. I really prefer that someone walk me thru this via the phone & I looked on there, & there's very few Word experts. Most are like me, they just know the basics.

    Thanks

    Michelle

Hi Michelle,

Re: #1. No. They're entirely different things. Templates are a special kind of file Word documents are created from. They ensure new documents contain a desrired standard formatting and content. Depending on the user's requirements, a template might contain a textbox.

Re: #2. Right-click on the logo, then 'Wrap Text' and change the wrapping to Square or Tight. You can the drag the logo around.

Re: #3. When creating a line using the Autoshape tools, move the cursor to where you want the line to start, then hold down the Shift key whilst dragging the cursor to where you want the line to end. You can fine-tune the line's position & angle via the Drawing Tools.

Re: #4. Check your page margins and header/footer sizes - you may need smaller ones.

Hi Paul,

Ok, so I think I will need a template after I finish this one version of this letter with the text box in it.

Re: #2 - I did right click on the logo & there's no wrap option.

Ok, remember I'm on 2003, so I found the area you wanted me to change re: wordwrap, but it's greyed out, so I can't change it to square or tight.
Re: #3 - I did what you said & thought it worked, but now all I see are 2 dots, one at the top & one at the bottom.
Re: #4 - so there's no way to move the footer down when you are in the footer area?

Can you also explain how to do this?

"She had a black background & white text. I found the background color & it made the background black, but it didn't make the entire background black. Is that b/c I have 2 text boxes within the large squared area? I actually added a 3rd one at the top, as I forgot to add that text above.

Where the text is, that area's background is white & I don't understand why. When I tried to make the text white, of course you couldn't see it so I removed that."

Here's a SS of what I see...

I think I made the text box way too big. I'm going off of someone else's design for that text box.

Thanks

Michelle

Hi Michelle,

Re: #2. In Word 2003, Right-clicking on a picture usually reveals a menu with a 'Format Picture' option. The wrapping tools can be found there.

Re: #3. Unless the start & end are very close together, you should see more than that. Again, right-clicking on the line (after the cursor changes to a cross-arrow)reveals a menu with a 'Format AutoShape' option. Tools for resizing, changing the line colour & thickness can be found there.

Re: #4. The Page Setup tools remain available while you're in a header/footer (via File|Page Setup).

Without seeing the actual document, I can't really say exactly how the effects were achieved. If you attach the document to a post (delete anything sensitive), I'll take a look at it. You can do this via the paperclip symbol on the 'Go Advanced' tab.
