At normal reading distances, very few people could pick out individual pixels in a 300dpi colour image on an A4/letter page, so I don't see why you'd want to go higher. Even with b/w line art, your printer's in-built image enhancements would smooth out any irregularities that might otherwise be noticed. If the images are for viewing on-screen, even 300dpi is more than would be displayed on a typical laptop with the page zoomed to 250% magnification!
