Word's cross-references are designed to either adopt the format of the source or the format of the destination, depending on whether you used the 'preserve formatting' option. There is no third option. That said, if you don't want either of those options, you can edit each cross-reference to apply a specific format via a Charformat switch. To do that:
1. Select a cross reference and press Shift-F9. You should see something like { REF Bookmark \h } or { REF Bookmark \h \* MERGEFORMAT }, where 'Bookmark' is a bookmark name.
2. Delete the \* MERGEFORMAT switch if it is present.
3. Format the 'R' of 'REF' with the format you crequire
4. Add a Charformat switch, thus: { REF Bookmark \h \* Charformat }
5. Press F9 to update the field.
