Unhappy Old spreadsheets being changed to read-only in Mac Office 2011

Help! Shortly after I updated to Office for Mac 2011 vn 14.6.1, I tried to open one of my everyday Excel spreadsheets that I created and have been using for years! It started to open, then I got the alert "The file is locked for editing. Locked by (me) Filename (Filename). You can open the file as read-only." I can then only select Read-Only or Cancel. If I open it and then try editing it, an alert states it has been edited by another person and I have to "Save as" with a different name.
I can then open the renamed file okay, with no problems. BUT ... if I subsequently delete the original file, the second file automatically becomes a read-only file also.
Using Command-I Get-Info on the file in the Finder, verifies that the file is NOT locked, so I cannot change that as the MS website suggests to resolve the problem with the file.

This is happening to each spreadsheet I try, until I'm afraid to open my Excel files for fear they will all become corrupted and/or I will have to have two files for every SS I use! None of these files were locked or saved as read-only previously.

If anyone has seen this before or has a solution our suggest, I will be very grateful. One option, that I don't know how to do, would be to revert to the previous version of Office and try the update again.
