The instructions to which you refer are for creating individual hyperlinks in mailmerge documents, not emails. As mailing direct to email doesn't use Word's hyperlink fields, that approach won't work.

I have no experience with the MapiLab Mail Merge Toolkit add-on, so I can't give any advice in that regard.
