This is an example of what I'm taking about.

Notice the transparent area at the bottom of the image? This area does not show when I view the slide in PowerPoint - however, it does after I Save as Picture.

It appears the additional areas is connected to text. If text is near the edge of the slide, I get the additional space. If I move text away from the edge or delete it - problem goes away...

Bewildering...
