The ¶ symbol is a paragraph mark; it stores paragraph formatting (and the final paragraph of a document also stores section formatting for the last section of the document).
A section break is represented by a dotted line and it also states the type of section that follows ("Next page" for example). You can see section breaks more easily if you also switch to Draft view (View tab | Draft).
