Hi Sandy,
As you have stated there are various versions of OneNote out there. My advice would be to use the 2010 version and the version that came with windows 10. OneNote 2016 is nice but make sure that you don't have to may versions of OneNote hanging around. It might bite you in the near future. Detailed documentation? Nope you are bummed to the OneNote website.

I am using 2010 & 2013 & the app. Somehow that seems to work...
